The Fate of the Furious Review

The Fast and the Furious movies have always been cheesy, but The Fate of the Furious is not just cheesy, its an interminable overload of corny plot, trite dialogues and banal action. The eighth movie in the franchise, it lacks originality in any department and I would not hesitate to say that its the worst movie in the franchise.

The Good:

The action scenes, the car chases, the stunts and an epic climax chase in an icy terrain are certainly gripping and well-executed, and probably the only positive I have to say about the movie. There is also a hilarious one with a brutal fight scene where Jason Statham carries a baby while fighting.  However, its very hard for a viewer to sit through one action sequence after another and see the point of it, in the absence of a sensible and substantial plot to back these sequences up.

The Bad:

The Fate of the Furious is the pinnacle in the cheesy movie territory with a barrage of non-stop cheesy dialogues, one after another. It might make sense to have these kinds of lines once or twice during some significant point in the movie, but in The Fate of the Furious, people just speak in such dialogues. They say things like “It’s not the car. It’s who’s behind the wheel” and “Rule number three: There are no rules.” throughout the movie, and it grates on your nerve after the first few times. The plot is a farce that involves hacking, nuclear weapons, EMPs, torpedoes, submarines and whole lot of other nonsense. More than half the runtime is devoted to action sequences, which although well-crafted, lack the motive and thus feel incessant and redundant. There is not much scope for acting either, with no depth in any character, when all their talent is tested in uttering ridiculously stupid lines with a straight face. I also don’t understand the obsessive need to have such a long runtime when there is nothing you’ve got but action scenes. I was relieved to walk out of the theater when it ended.

The Fate of the Furious has a lot of action and cheesy lines. An unnecessary and irritating amount of it. On the other hand, it doesn’t have a smidgen of sense in its story. I wouldn’t recommend watching it even if you’re a hard-core fan of action and frankly, even if you’re a fan of the The Fast and the Furious franchise. I will rate it 5/10.

Rating: 5/10
